What are the steps to upgrade VVP 2.X when using the Kubernetes Operator?

The CRD chart defines the Kubernetes resource schemas used by the VVP operator. When upgrading VVP 2.X, the operator may expect an updated CRD therefore it is highly recommended to upgrade the CRD version as part of VVP upgrades.

NOTE: CRD upgrades are not guaranteed to be backward compatible. Existing VVP Custom Resources (CRs) will continue to run after the upgrade, but if the CRD schema has changed, updates to the CR may be required before making modifications to the resource.

NOTE: Existing CRs are not automatically modified during the upgrade.

Upgrade Steps

  1. Review Release Notes
It is always a good idea to check the release notes for the target version to determine if any breaking changes were introduced to the CRD

  2. Upgrade the CRD Chart

    helm upgrade [CRD-RELEASE] ververica/ververica-platform-crd \
    -n [VVP-NAMESPACE] \
    --version [HELM-VERSION]

  3. Verify the CRD is upgraded

kubectl get crds | grep ververica

  4. Upgrade the VVP Chart

    helm upgrade [VVP-RELEASE] ververica/ververica-platform \
    --version [HELM-VERSION] \
    --values custom-values.yaml

  5. Confirm the platform pod is running and healthy
